Limestone mining

The place name Comblanchien has been transferred as a generic term for limestone from this place and its surroundings. The region is one of the most important limestone mining areas in France. The limestone obtained there have been used for numerous well-known monuments in France, inter alia for the Opera in Paris . In the 18th and 19th centuries, chimneys were made with preference from the limestone .

These beige Jurassic limestones ( Bathonium ) , sometimes with pink nuances, are very dense, the number of pores is very small and therefore they take on an excellent polish. Many varieties show an oolithic structure. The mining also extends to some neighboring villages.
