The Bathonian (also shortened to Bathon ) is in the geological the third chronostratigraphic stage of the Middle Jurassic series in Jura . It began geochronologically about 168.3 million years ago and ended about 166.1 million years ago and thus lasted about 2 million years. The bathonium is preceded by the bajocium ; it is followed by the callovium .

Naming and history

The type locality of the stage is near the city of Bath on the River Avon ( Somerset , England). The name Bathonium is a Latinized version of the city name. The name was first introduced in 1843 by Jean Baptiste Julien d'Omalius d'Halloy and adopted by Alcide Dessalines d'Orbigny in 1852. For the first time he defined the approximate extent of the step.

Definition and GSSP

The lower limit of the level is defined with the first onset of the ammonite species Parkinsonia (Gonolkites) convergens . The stage ends with the onset of the ammonite genus Kepplerites . A GSSP (type locality and type profile) has not yet been defined.

Breakdown

The bathonium can be divided into the sub-levels lower, middle and upper bathonium.

The bathonium in the Tethyalen area is divided into the following ammonite biozones:
