Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (born September 6, 1802 in Couëron in the Loire-Atlantique department , near Nantes , † June 30, 1857 in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine , near Paris ) was a French scientist who worked in the fields of Zoology , paleontology , geology , archeology and anthropology worked. He is considered the founder of micropalaeontology. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ ADOrb. "

Live and act

D'Orbigny spent his youth in La Rochelle , where he studied marine animals. He was particularly interested in the microorganisms that he examined under the microscope. He worked with researchers from the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (MNHN) in Paris. In 1826 his studies were published under the title Tableau méthodique de la classe des Céphalopodes , through which the class of foraminifera was introduced.

In 1826 he took part in a seven-year research trip by the MNHN to South America, which took him to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. He returned with an extensive collection of samples and described his discoveries in Voyage dans l'Amérique Méridionale (9 volumes, 1835–47).

In the following period he concentrated on researching invertebrates, in particular the classification and stratigraphic classification of species from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. He defined some geological strata (such as Kimmeridgian , Oxfordian , Callovian for the fine division of the Jura ), the names of which are still used today in the international division of layers .

In 1840 he began the systematic description of fossils in France and published La Paléontologie Française (8 volumes, 1840–60).

In 1849 he published another important work with the title Prodrome de Paléontologie Stratigraphique Universelle [...] (3 volumes, 1849-52), in which he described 18,000 different species.

In 1853 he was appointed professor of paleontology at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle.

D'Orbigny died on June 30, 1857 after a year-long illness in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris.

His brother Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny was also a noted naturalist.

Honors

In his honor the genus Orbignya Mart. ex Endl. named from the palm family (Arecaceae). Presumably the genus Orbignesius Bonaparte , 1855 is a synonym for the actual Kotingas ( Cotinga Brisson , 1760).

Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and René Primevère Lesson honored him in 1831 in the name of the Graubrust high-altitude runner ( Thinocorus orbignyianus ), Ludwig Reichenbach in the name of the rustling canasteros ( Asthenes dorbignyi ), Charles de Souancé in 1856 in the name of the Andean Parakeet ( Bolborhynchus de orfresbygayius ) 1845 in the name of the Orbigny dwarf woodpecker ( Picumnus dorbignyanus ). Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte had already used the name for the Andean Parakeet in 1854, but since the description is missing, it is considered a noun nudum . When Charles de Souancé described Iconographie des perroquets in plate 24 and the accompanying text Balborynchus Orbignesia in 1857 , it was a different species and so had to follow up with the lemon parakeet subspecies ( Psilopsiagon aurifrons margaritae ( Berlioz & Dorst }, 1956)) the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature a new name will be found. Hermann Schlegel gave him 1837 xenodontinae -Art Apostolepis dorbignyi , André Marie Constant Duméril & Gabriel Bibron 1839 gymnophthalmidae -Art Bachia dorbignyi and 1841, the toads -Art Rhinella dorbignyi , Bibron 1854 xenodontinae Type Xenodon dorbignyi , Julio Germán Kozlovsky 1898 liolaemidae -Art Liolaemus dorbignyi , Julio Rafael Contreras Roqué and his wife Amalia Nelida Chialchiaporsupermanentey de Contreras 1984 the D'Orbigny comb rat ( Ctenomys dorbignyi ), François Louis Nompar de Caumont de La Force 1855 the wetting freshwater stingray ( Potamotrygon ).

In addition, his name is in the drop forehead Baumsteiger subtype ( Xiphorhynchus guttatoides dorbignyanus ( Pucheran & Lafresnaye , 1850)), the Ferruginous hooked beak subtype ( Diglossa sittoides dorbignyi ( Boissonneau , 1840)) and the Cory's Buschammer subtype ( Arremon flavirostris dorbignii ( Sclater, PL , 1856)).

Trochilus d'orbignyi Bourcier & Mulsant , 1846 is now considered synonymous with the blue-capped puffleg ( Eriocnemis glaucopoides ( d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye , 1838)), Larus dobrignyi Audouin , 1826 as synonymous with probably the Whiskered Tern ( Chlidonias hybrida ( Pallas , 1811)), Onychorhynchus coronatus orbignyianus Carriker , 1935 as a synonym for the crown tyrant subtype ( Onychorhynchus coronatus castelnaui Deville , 1849), Cathartes orbignyi Sztolcman , 1925 as a synonym for the turkey vulture ( Cathartes aura ( Linnaeus , 1758)), Mytilus orbignyanus horn , 1854 as a synonym for Aulacomya atra ( Molina , 1782).
