Jules Bourcier

Claude Marie Jules Bourcier (born February 20, 1797 in Cuisery , † March 10, 1873 in Quartier des Batignolles ) was a French ornithologist, politician and businessman.

Live and act

His father Claude Marie Bourcier (1764–1829) and his mother Jeanne Marie b. Chambosse (1767-1830) both came from Cuisery and died in Lyon. On October 20, 1820, Bourcier married Benoîte-Aline Jusserand in Lyon. The three children Claudine Hélène Elicia (1821-), Jeanne Caroline Caelina (1824-) and Claude Joseph Héliodore (1826) resulted from the marriage. In 1836 he became a full member of the Société d'agriculture, histoire naturelle et arts utiles de Lyon . At that time he was a trader and lived in the port St-Chair, 19 in Lyon. Bourcier owned a spinning mill in Millery and supplied the Société Séricicole in Paris with the best silk from silk spinners , which he fed with mulberry leaves .

He was Mayor of Millery from February 5, 1832 to November 26, 1837. Here he owned the La Sauvagère country house , which much later also belonged to the soprano Ninon Eugénie Vallin (1886–1961). Thanks to Bourcier, the municipality was able to acquire a large piece of land in 1836/37 on which a new town hall was built, which, however, was demolished in 1912 and was finally replaced by the current town hall. Together with Geoffroy Morel, he developed a reel machine for which they were awarded the bronze medal by the Jury Central sur les Produits de l'Industrie Française in 1839 .

From 1849 to 1850 he was French consul in Quito . He returned to France in 1851 and was the first person to introduce the tuberous wood sorrel from Peru for cultivation in his home country. After his return he lived in the quai de la Rapée, 46, in Paris.

On June 5, 1861, his wife extended a patent for the manufacture of submarine cables . At that time they placed in the cité des Fleures, no 20 in Batignolles.

Bourcier and Science

Bourcier was an expert on hummingbirds and owned one of the largest collections of hummingbirds in France. Between 1839 and 1856, often together with Étienne Mulsant and Adolphe Delattre , he described many hummingbird taxa from Central and South America, including the miracle sylph ( Loddigesia mirabilis ), the bronze- tailed shadow hummingbird ( Glaucis dohrnii ) or some types of woolen panties. Most of his scientific articles appeared in the journal Revue Zoologique . Often one finds in the literature Jules Verreaux and Édouard Verreaux as first authors of the subspecies Lophornis chalybeus verreauxii , because the heading in the original article identifies them as authors. In a correction of errors in the same issue, the two brothers make it clear that Bourcier is the sole author of the article. Bourcier is also incorrectly mentioned in the literature as a co-author in the first description of the red dwarf mazama ( Mazama rufina ). But this is also wrong, as Jacques Pucheran was the sole author of the article. Bourcier had only made the type copy available to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle .

The Bourcier collection, which consisted of about 1000 bellows with parrots, hummingbirds and tangars, was bought by Thomas Bellerby Wilson (1807–1865) for the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia . His brother Edward Wilson (1808–1888), who lived in England at this time, bought the collection for him in 1846.

On March 2, 1874, after his death, his entire collection of hummingbirds was sold in Paris. The natural produce dealer and natural scientist Émile Deyrolle (1838–1917) published a catalog for this auction under the name Collection typique d'oiseaux mouches (Trochilidés) .

Bourcier had at least one son named Héliodore Bourcier, he takes its name in the gorgeted woodstar ( Chaetocercus heliodor ) ( Bourcier , 1840) (syn: Ornismya heliodori) gave, because the love of science and his interest germinates in it for the natural history. He also dedicated an epithet to his wife in the first description of the white-breasted hummingbird ( Eriocnemis aline ) (Syn: Ornismyia Aline).

Memberships

In 1839 he became a member of the Société cuvierienne, which was newly founded in 1838 . Around 1857/58 he became a member of the Société impériale zoologique d'acclimatation, founded in 1854 . In 1856 he became an honorary member of the German Ornithological Society . In 1858 he wrote a letter to the Society on behalf of a commission of Parisian scholars subscribing to a commemorative coin for the late Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte . In addition to Bourcier, Louis-Joseph-Napoléon, Count of Cambacérès (1832–1868), Léonce Élie de Beaumont (1798–1874), Alfred Moquin-Tandon (1804–1863), Louis Félicien Joseph Caignart de Saulcy (1807–1880), Charles de Souancé (1823–1896), Joseph Paul Gaimard (1796–1858), Jules Verreaux (1807–1873), Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville (1799–1874), John Edward Gray (1800–1875), John Gould (1804 –1881), Ludwig Reichenbach (1793–1873) and Gustav Hartlaub (1814–1900) on the commission. The letter to the subscription appeared u. a. in the journal for ornithology. He was also a member of the Société Séricicole in Paris, Vice-President of the Société d'agriculture in Lyon and President of the Commission for Silk. After returning from South America, he became a corresponding member of the Société d'agriculture.

Dedication names

Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer (1805–1877) dedicated the Bourciera snail genus to Bourcier in 1851 .

Frédéric de Lafresnaye paid his respects to him in 1845 with the specific epithet for the Andean beard bird ( Eubucco bourcierii ) . So Lafresnaye wrote:

“Nous dédions cette charming espèces à M. Jules Bourcier, à la genérosité avec lequels il s'occupe si consciencieusement d'une bonne monographie de Trochylidées. (German: I dedicate this enchanting species to Mr. Jules Bourcier, for his generosity, which he showed during his conscientious study in his beautiful monograph on hummingbirds. "

Another species with his name was described by René Primevère Lesson in 1832 as the brown-bellied shadow hummingbird ( Phaethornis bourcieri ). With the description came a tablet supplied by Jean-Gabriel Prêtre (1768–1849).

Charles Bonaparte considered him in 1851 in a subspecies of the brown-eared tangare ( Chlorochrysa calliparaea bourcieri ), and in 1855 in a subspecies of the rein pigeon ( Geotrygon frenata bourcieri ). In his Conspectus generum avium from 1850, Bonaparte created the new genus Bourcieria , into which he included the species Ornismia torquata Boissonneau , 1840 (synonym for the Andean hummingbird ( Coeligena torquata )), Trochilus Prunellei Bourcier , 1843 (synonym for the blue shoulder Andean hummingbird ( Coeligena prunellei )), Trochilus Conradii Bourcier , 1847 (synonym for the subspecies of the Andean hummingbird ( Coeligena torquata conradii )) and Trochilus Wilsoni Delattre & Bourcier , 1846 (synonym for the brown Andean hummingbird ( Coeligena wilsoni ). Later, all species of the genus Coeligena Lesson were added in 1832.

Georg Jan (1761–1866) and Ferdinando Sordelli (1837–1916) published a new species of adder in 1867 under the name Dromicus Boursieri , which is now known as Saphenophis boursieri . Since the type specimen came from the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Quito , it is likely that it was a typo and that the name was given in honor of Bourcier. That is why the common name Bourcier's Saphenophis is found in English .
