The black panties ( Eriocnemis derbyi ), also known as the black feather panty hummingbird , is a species of hummingbird belonging to the genus of wool panties . There are currently no known subspecies. The species is therefore considered to be monotypical .

The black panties reach a size of 9.7 centimeters. The beak is straight and about 20 mm long. The top is metallic green and the rump is copper colored. The under tail-coverts are glittering green. The black tail is pointed and forked. The underside is glittering green. The male is characterized by black feather pants. The female is a little smaller. The underside is white with glittering green spots. The feather panties are made of white and black feathers.

Occurrence and habitat

The black panty occurs at altitudes between 2500 and 3600 m (but usually above 2900 m). The distribution area known today is in the central Andes and extends from Tolima and Nariño in Colombia to northern Ecuador . The black panties inhabit the borders of wet forests as well as bushland, meadows and bush-like ravines.

Way of life

The black panties are very active. Its diet consists of flower nectar. The breeding season is in February.

Danger

Due to the ongoing destruction of its habitat, it has become quite rare locally. It is currently classified as Endangered by BirdLife International .

Etymology and history of research

The black panties were first discovered at Puracé near Popayán in Colombia. Adolphe Delattre and Jules Bourcier described the species under the name Trochilus Derbyi . It was later assigned to the genus Eriocnemis . This name is derived from the Greek words »erion ἔριον « for »wool« and »knēmis κνημίς « for »cuff, leg splint «. The name "derbyi" is dedicated to Edward Smith Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby from Knowsley .
