Franz Xaver Schafarzik , Hungarian Ferenc Xavér Schafarzik (born March 20, 1854 in Debrecen , Kingdom of Hungary , † September 5, 1927 in Budapest ) was an Austro-Hungarian , later Hungarian geologist and mineralogist.

Life

Schafarzik received his school education in Nagyszeben (today Sibiu , Romania ) at the middle school. He completed his later higher education at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Budapest . In 1876 he got a job here at the mineralogical-geological chair.

Schafarzik was from 1876 to 1882 assistant to Professor József Szabó . During this time he received his doctorate (1881). A year later he was accepted into the Royal Hungarian Geological Institute . From 1891 he worked as a private lecturer and from 1904 to 1926 as professor of mineralogy and geology at the Polytechnic of Budapest .

His work at the Royal Hungarian Geological Institute focused on detailed geological surveys in the Pilis Mountains , the Krassó-Szörény Mountains and the Banat Mountains and in the Southern Carpathians . Study trips took him to Dagestan , Armenia , Italy, Istria , Sweden, Norway and Greece. During his study trip to Greece, Schafarzik visited several ancient stone quarries and described them in his published report (1895).

From 1885 onwards, he devoted 21 geological articles to the Krassó-Szörény Mountains , and in this way also played a key role in Eduard Suess's investigations . The results worked out with Suess were of great importance for the geological understanding of the arch that connects the Carpathians and Balkanids .

In 1885, together with Sándor Gesell, he published the detailed catalog in Hungarian on the Hungarian rocks that are more important for the art and construction industries . Schafarzik also dealt in a special way with the farm stones in the area of the then Kingdom of Hungary . Hungary owes the most thorough contemporary publications on this subject to his work. Among the Hungarian geologists of his time, Franz Xaver Schafarzik was the most outstanding figure who in some of her publications referred to the usefulness of natural stones in detail and described possible usable deposits from this perspective.

His German-language work Detailed Communications on the Quarries on the Territory of the Hungarian Empire from 1909 is still a key publication today. It describes over 2,500 stone quarries in the Kingdom of Hungary. Corresponding to the territorial extent at the time of publication, in addition to today's Hungary, the area of Slovakia as a whole as well as parts of Croatia (except Dalmatia), Ukraine (western peripheral zones) and Romania (Banat, Transylvania) were taken into account.

In the period from 1886 to 1899, Schafarzik was intensively involved in editorial tasks at FÖLDTANI KÖZLÖNY (Geological Communications of the Royal Hungarian Geological Institute).

After his death, Hungary's first geological guide appeared in Budapest in 1929, which he had developed together with Aladár Vendl .
