The Napodegen wing ( Campylopterus villaviscensio ) is a species of bird from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae) found in Colombia , Ecuador and Peru . The IUCN classifies the population as “ Near Threatened ”.
features
The Napodegen wing reaches a body length of 11.5 cm, with the relatively long, straight beak about 2.8 cm. The top of the male's head glistens emerald green, the rest of the top shimmers green. Behind the eyes they have a little white spot. Throat and chest glitter purple-blue, the belly is gray with green round spots. Most of the tail is steel blue, with the central control feathers being metal green. The top of the females shimmers green, but glitters more noticeably on the back of the skull. The postocular spot is smaller than that of the male. The underside is uniformly gray. The tail is similar to the male, but the outer feathers are speckled with white.
behavior
They seem to collect their nectar relatively close to the ground. The plants they will fly to include heliconias , bromeliads, and other plants. They hunt insects in flight.
Reproduction
Not much is known about their breeding behavior. They were observed in breeding mood from October to November.
distribution and habitat
Mostly they are in the forest along streams and rivers. Sometimes they venture to the edge of the forest to look for flowering shrubs. They tend to move in the lower strata of the mountain forests of the foothills and subtropical zones of the eastern Andes. Here they can be found at altitudes between 900 and 1700 meters. Smaller populations are known in the west of the Napo province near the Sumaco volcano , south as far as the Zamora Chinchipe province in the Cordillera del Cóndor . Protected areas where they occur are the Sumaco Napo Galeras National Park and the Podocarpus National Park . In 1986, Tristan J. Davis discovered specimens for the first time in the valley of the Río Marañón about 375 kilometers from the Ecuadorian border. In 1998, Luis Augusto Mazariegos Hurtado and Paul George William Salaman first discovered the species in the Departamento de Nariño in Colombia.
Etymology and history of research
Jules Bourcier described the Napodegen wing under the name Trochilus Villaviscensio . The type specimen came from the province of Napo . Already in 1827 William Swainson introduced the new genus Campylopterus , which was later assigned to the Napodegen wing. This word is derived from the Greek »kampylos καμπύλος « for »curved, curved« and »-pteros, pteron πτερο « for »-fluted, wing«. The species name villaviscensio is dedicated to the Ecuadorian geographer, botanist and explorer Manuel Villavicencio Montúfar (1804–1871), who was governor of the Napo province at this time .
