John Todd Zimmer (born February 28, 1889 in Bridgeport , Ohio , † January 6, 1957 in White Plains , New York ) was an American ornithologist , entomologist , author , curator and chairman of the ornithological department of the American Museum of Natural History .

Life

His first career steps as a naturalist were mainly shaped by his life in Nebraska . Here he graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1911 with an undergraduate degree . A few years later, he graduated with a Master of Science degree. In 1943, at the height of his career, he was finally awarded an honorary doctorate in science. At the beginning of his scientific career, Zimmer initially specialized in the field of entomology. Despite his specialization, he always had an eye on ornithology. During his time in college, for example, he collected a variety of birds from Nebraska, which he bequeathed to the University of Nebraska. After his time in college, he first worked as a field entomologist for the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station , whereby he also worked closely with the United States Department of Agriculture . In 1913 he went to the Philippines for the Ministry of Agriculture as deputy head of department for pest control . Four years later he moved on to Port Moresby , where he worked as an expert for the Ministry of Agriculture of Papua New Guinea . Here he met Margaret Thompson, whom he married in 1917.

They both had two children together, a son named Lawrence Thompson Zimmer and a daughter named Ida Elithabeth Zimmer Sprague. His wife died in October 1944. Little is known about his time in Southeast Asia . Even so, he published two articles on the bird life of the Philippines in the Philippine Journal of Science in 1918 . He sold the birds he had collected in Southeast Asia to the American Museum of Natural History. Ernst Mayr used the birds of Papua New Guinea for his book List of New Guinea birds: a systematic and faunal list of the birds of New Guinea and adjacent islands . After returning to the USA , he worked for a short time at the Museum of the University of Nebraska. But soon he got an offer from the Field Museum of Natural History . Here he published two volumes of the Catalog of the Ayer Ornithological Library together with Wilfred Hudson Osgood . During his time in Chicago he also took part in the Conover - Everard - Expedition in Africa and in the Captain Marshall Expedition in Peru sponsored by Berthold Laufer and David Charles Davies . During the time in Peru in particular, numerous publications were made under the name Studies of Peruvian Birds .

Zimmer's interest in neotropical birds was awakened. It was Carl Eduard Hellmayr and Frank Michler Chapman who lured him to the American Museum of Natural History as deputy curator in 1930. In 1935 he was promoted to executive curator and in 1942 to curator. He had an intensive working relationship with William Henry Phelps Sr. in Caracas. He visited Phleps twice and together with him published articles on birds from Venezuela . He also had a very good relationship with James Lee Peters . When Glover Morrill Allen died in 1942 , he also took on the post of editor of the ornithological magazine The Auk . James Paul Chapin , then President of the American Ornithologists' Union , proposed him for this position at the time. In 1954 he took over from Robert Cushman Murphy as chairman of the museum's ornithological department. A short time later, Zimmer became seriously ill that he ended up in a wheelchair.

Honors

In 1952 Zimmer was awarded the William Brewster Medal for his meticulous records and contributions to avifauna in the birds of South America . The decision committee justified the decision in their report with the words:

His series of reports began in 1931 and continues to this day. All were published in the American Museum Novitates magazine under the title Studies of Peruvian Birds. They contain an extremely thorough and error-free researched taxonomic classification of the majority of all South American genera. The reports represent an excellent basis for students of the avifauna of South America. They are characterized by a high degree of precision, good taxonomic assessment and all-embracing. "

He was a fellow of both The Explorers Club of New York and the American Ornithologists' Union.

Dedication names

In 1977 Melvin Alvah Traylor junior Zimmer dedicated the genus Zimmerius for his contribution to the systematics of the neotropical birds and the unique contributions to the patterns on the wings of this genus. In 1936 Osgood named a type of white-toothed shrew from the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the name Crocidura zimmeri . The rust-bellied thicket panties ( Synallaxis zimmeri ) ( Koepcke , 1957) and the gray-throated tapaculo ( Scytalopus zimmeri ) ( Bond & Meyer de Schauensee , 1940) also honor Zimmer in their scientific name. In English, the common name Zimmer's Flatbill ( Tolmomyias flaviventris zimmeri ) (Bond, 1947) was introduced for a subspecies of the yellow-bellied broad-billed tyrant ( Tolmomyias flaviventris ) ( Wied-Neuwied , 1831) .

Other authors named a subspecies in honor of Zimmer. I.a. the following subspecies were dedicated to rooms:
