The gray- winged bunting ( Incaspiza ortizi ) is a species of bird from the tangar family (Thraupidae). The stock is on the IUCN as endangered ( Vulnerable estimated).

features

The gray-winged bunting reaches a body length of about 16.5 centimeters. The gray-brown top has dark stripes on the back and shoulder area. The ear covers and neck are gray. The forehead, the area around the eyes and a small throat patch are black and frame the orange beak. The legs are also orange. The gray chest gradually merges into white towards the belly and the lower tail coverts. The outer black tail feathers contain mostly white elements.

distribution and habitat

The bird is endemic to Peru . He has been u. a. observed in the northern part of Huancabamba Province . The bird has also been sighted in the extreme northeast of the Piura province . Further stocks were discovered on the Pacific slopes of the Andes in the northeast of the Santa Cruz province in the Cajamarca region . The bird is also found in the east of the Celendín province . Since the gray-winged bunting was seen on the Marañón on the borders of the Amazonas and La Libertad regions , there is a legitimate possibility that the population is higher than expected. In all these areas it moves at altitudes between 1800 and 2600 meters. The typical habitat consists of mountain scrub. The bird can be found on herbaceous bushes up to 1.40 meters in size, smaller acacias ( Acacia ), various cacti and bromeliads ( Bromeliaceae ).

The bird's behavior is relatively inconspicuous, so that relatively little is known about the behavior. It feeds on seeds, parts of plants and insects. Its breeding season is from May to September.
