The Tangaren (Thraupidae) are a species and form rich bird family in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes). Previously they were assigned to the Ammern (Emberizidae) as the subfamily Thraupinae .
distribution
Tangars are found exclusively in America and the West Indies and predominantly live in the forest canopy. Most of the species live in the tropical areas of South America and are resident birds . Only four species have used areas north of Mexico as habitat .
features
The plumage is brightly colored and striking, and they have well-developed legs that make life in the trees easier. The singing is, apart from that of the thrush tangar, not very impressive and poorly developed.
nutrition
They feed mainly on insects. They often follow the trains of the wandering ants and grab the startled insects.
Reproduction
The nests are mostly cup-shaped and are built on trees or bushes; some species also build closed nests that have a side entrance. The clutch consists of one to five eggs.
