The plush head tangar ( Catamblyrhynchus diadema ) is a 14.5 cm South American songbird. The taxonomic position of this species is controversial. Some zoologists place him in the family of the bunting (Emberizidae), others put him in the family of the tangaren (Thraupidae) or give him their own, the family plush-headed tangar (Catamblyrhychinae).

Appearance

The bird has reddish-brown chest plumage, black back and tail feathers. A yellow-orange bonnet is worn on his head. The beak is black and the legs are gray in color.

distribution and habitat

The bird inhabits the cloud forests and open clearings of the Andes from Venezuela to northern Argentina.

Way of life

The bird looks for insects in the bushes and on the ground. Further details on the way of life and the brood are not yet known due to the hidden way of life of the birds.

Danger

Although the exact total population of this species is not known, the IUCN classifies this species as not endangered.
