The yellow-bellied peacock ( Sporophila nigricollis ) is a songbird from the genus of the peacock ( Sporophila ) within the family of the tangaren (Thraupidae).

features

The yellow-bellied monkey reaches a size of about 11 centimeters. The head, throat and upper chest are black. The belly is light yellow. Females and young birds are olive-yellow on the upper side, the males olive-colored. Its closest relative, the hooded monkey , is believed to have died out.

distribution and habitat

The yellow-bellied monkey is widespread in Central America (e.g. Costa Rica , Panama ), in South America (from Colombia via Ecuador , Venezuela , Brazil to Argentina ) and on the Lesser Antilles (e.g. Trinidad and Tobago , Martinique , Guadeloupe ) and inhabits open habitats in pairs from the lowlands to altitudes of 2300 meters.

Reproduction

The clutch consists of two to three eggs. The cup-shaped nest has a diameter of 8.5 centimeters. The breeding season is 13 days.
