The Maron abdominal hooked beak ( Diglossa gloriosissima ) is a bird art from the family of tanagers (Thraupidae). The range of this endemic species is limited to the South American country Colombia . The stock is on the IUCN as endangered ( Endangered estimated).
features
The chestnut-bellied hook bill reaches a body length of about 14.5 to 15 centimeters. The upturned black beak has a hook-shaped tip. The eyes are dark. The majority of the plumage (upper side, wings, throat, parts of the breast) of the male is shiny black. The chest and belly are chestnut brown. The small arm covers are blue-gray. The rump is inconspicuous slate-colored. The female is very similar. The rump is blue-gray in color than in the male, while the shoulder spots appear a bit gray.
distribution and habitat
The bird is found in the Andes west of Popayán . So far, three places are known where he was observed. He was spotted in the Páramo de Frontino and on the Cerro Paramillo in the Antioquia department and on the Cerro Munchique in the Cauca department . Its habitat is near the tree line at altitudes between 3000 and 3800 meters. There it moves in semi-moist to wet bushes and cloud forests, which are sometimes very close to the vegetation of typical páramo .
behavior
Not much is currently known about the behavior of the chestnut-bellied hookbeak. It is believed that it behaves similarly to the steel hookbill ( Diglossa lafresnayii ), as some authors argue that it is a subspecies of D. lafresnayii . One of its greatest adversaries in terms of territory is the black-throated hooked beak ( Diglossa brunneiventris ).
Subspecies
So far, two subspecies are known, which differ mainly in their coloration and distribution area. These are:
- Diglossa gloriosissima gloriosissima Chapman, 1912
- Diglossa gloriosissima boylei Graves , 1990, occurs in Páramo de Frontino in Colombia
