The Piura Province is one of eight provinces in the Piura Region in northwestern Peru . The province has an area of 6211.16 km². At the 2017 census, 799,321 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 502,339, in 2007 it was 665,991. The provincial administration is located in the city of Piura .
Geographical location
The province of Piura is centrally located in the Piura region. It extends over the desert-like coastal plain and reaches up to 5 km to the Pacific coast. The longitudinal extent in NNE-SSW direction is about 107 km. The Río Piura crosses the west of the province. Irrigated agriculture is practiced there. The south-east of the province as well as the extreme south-west are desert.
The province of Piura borders the province of Paita in the west, the province of Sullana in the northwest , the province of Ayabaca in the northeast, the province of Morropón in the east, the province of Lambayeque ( Lambayeque region ) in the southeast and the province of Sechura in the south .
Administrative division
The province of Piura is divided into ten districts (distritos) . The district of Piura is the seat of the provincial administration.
