The province of Sullana is one of eight provinces in the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The province has an area of 5423.61 km². At the 2017 census, 311,454 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 234,562, in 2007 287,680. The provincial administration is located in the city of Sullana .
Geographical location
The province of Sullana is located in the north of the Piura region. It extends over the partly desert-like coastal plain and reaches up to 15 km to the Pacific coast. The longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction is about 140 km. The Río Chira crosses the province in a predominantly south-westerly direction. It is dammed up to the Poechos reservoir in the east of the province . Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the course of the river. In the north-west of the province lies the Cerros de Amotape National Park .
The province of Sullana borders the Tumbes region and Ecuador in the north . In the east are the provinces of Ayabaca and Piura , in the west the provinces of Paita and Talara .
Administrative division
The province of Sullana is divided into eight districts (distritos) . The district of Sullana is the seat of the provincial administration.
