The Ignacio Escudero district is located in the Sullana province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on September 10, 1965. The district was named after Ignacio Escudero y Valdivieso (1820-1866), a Peruvian politician who took part in the National Assembly of Peru in 1855. The district has an area of ​​188 km². At the 2017 census, there were 20,423 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 14,175, in 2007 17,862. The administrative center is the 35  m high town of San Jacinto with 8982 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Jacinto is located north of the west-flowing Río Chira , about 20 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Sullana . The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) from Sullana to Tumbes leads through the district and past San Jacinto.

Geographical location

The Ignacio Escudero district is located in the west of the Sullana province. It has a length in north-south direction of about 17 km and a maximum width of about 14 km. The Río Chira runs along the southern district boundary to the west. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the course of the river. The settlement areas in the district are also located there. Desert vegetation predominates in the northern half of the district.

The Ignacio Escudero district borders on the Tamarindo district ( Paita province ) in the west, the La Brea district ( Talara province ) in the north, the Marcavelica district in the east and the La Huaca district (Paita province) in the south .
