The Sullana District is located in the Sullana Province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on October 8, 1840. It has an area of 488.01 km². At the 2017 census, 169,335 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 121,894, in 2007 156,601. The administrative seat is the 60 m high provincial capital Sullana with 136,446 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sullana is located on the south bank of the west-flowing Río Chira , 35 km north of the regional capital Piura .
Geographical location
The Sullana District is located in the southeast of the Sullana Province. It has a maximum longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction of about 43 km and a maximum width of about 20 km. The Río Chira runs along the northern district boundary to the west. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the course of the river. In the north the district extends to the Poechos dam . Bellavista , an eastern suburb of the city of Sullana, forms the independent Bellavista district .
The Sullana district is bordered to the west by the district Miguel Checa , on the northwest by the districts Marcavelica , Salitral and Querecotillo , on the north by the district Lancones , in the far northeast of the district Las Lomas , in the northeast on the district Tambo Grande and in the south on the district of Piura .
