The Poechos reservoir is a medium-sized dam on the Peruvian river Río Chira in the border area between Peru and Ecuador . The purpose of the reservoir is to improve the use of the water flow in the Chira Valley through water storage , irrigation , flow regulation and electricity generation .

location

The Poechos reservoir is located in the northernmost part of Peru, on the lower reaches of the Río Chira, about 50 km north of the city of Piura , capital of the Piura region of the same name . It is located at 4 ° 40 'south latitude and 80 ° 30' west longitude at an altitude of 98 m above sea level in the district of Lancones in the province of Sullana , around 30 km from the border with Ecuador.

history

The reservoir was built in four phases.

Phase 1 (1970–1977)

The first phase consisted of the following measures:

  • Construction of the Poechos Dam (9 km long, up to 55 m high);
  • Construction of the drainage tunnel at the foot of the dam for a flow rate of up to 14 m³ / s;
  • Concrete overflow (400,000 m³ concrete);

Phase 2 (1978–1985)

The second phase included

  • the upper reaches of the Los Ejedos dam with a length of 220 m, a height of up to 20 m and a flow capacity of 3,000 m³ / s;
  • the main canal, which is 42 km long and allows a flow of 45 m³ / s;
  • the protective measures along the banks of the Río Piura (about 60 km long);
  • the canal system for the irrigation of around 35,000 ha.

Phase 3 (1985–1997)

The third phase consisted of

  • the upper course dam Sullana which is 75 m long, has a height of up to 12 m and lock gates with a total passage of 5,000 m³ / s;
  • the upper reaches canal north with a total capacity of 25,500 m³ / s over a distance of 56 km for the irrigation of 15,000 ha;
  • the south canal with a total flow of 7 m³ / s and a length of 35 km for irrigation of 7,000 ha of land;
  • and around 60 km of dykes along the regulated lower reaches of the Río Chiara.

Phase 4 (2000-2004)

The final phase included

  • the 12.5 MW Curumuy power plant (completed in 2000);
  • the 15.4 MW Poechos power plant (completed in 2004).

Data

The storage capacity of the dam is 1,000,000,000 m³, its catchment area is 14,000 km² and the maximum depth is 46 m.

The dam is 49 m high and 9 km long at the top of the dam, the discharge is a maximum of 4 m³ of water per second.

The original target was to revitalize the arid Piura Valley economically and to create modern irrigation for around 35,000 hectares of agricultural land. The two hydropower plants now supply around 100 GWh annually to Electronoroeste , the licensed energy company for northwestern Peru. The two Curunuy and Poechos power plants are expected to ensure 90% emission-free electrification of the country by 2010.
