River course
The Río Chira arises 25 km west-northwest of the city of Macará in the western foothills of the Andes at the confluence of the Río Catamayo and Río Macará . The Río Chira initially flows 120 km to the southwest. It forms the state border over a length of 52 km up to the confluence of the Río Alamor ( Río Malves ). The small town of Zapotillo is located on the northern bank of the river. At river kilometer 108, the river is dammed by a dam ( ⊙ ) over a length of about 20 km to the Poechos reservoir . The reservoir has a capacity of 885 million m³. Below the dam, the Río Chipillico flows into the Río Chira on the left. At river kilometer 70 the big city Sullana is on the left bank of the river. Two kilometers downstream is a weir ( ⊙ ) on the Río Chira. Above the weir, part of the river water is diverted via an irrigation canal. The water is used to irrigate agricultural areas north of the lower reaches. In the lower 70 kilometers, the Río Chira turns west. Finally the Río Chira flows into an estuary , which is separated from the sea by a spit .
