The Río Macará is the 39 km long left source river of the Río Chira . It runs along the border between the Peruvian province of Ayabaca and the Ecuadorian province of Loja .
River course
The Río Macará arises at the confluence of the Río Calvas and Río Sabiango , 5 km east of the small town of Macará . It flows in a predominantly west-northwest direction through the western foothills of the Andes . It forms the state border between Peru (in the south) and Ecuador (in the north) along its entire course of the river. Finally it unites with the Río Catamayo coming from the north to the Río Chira . The catchment area covers an area of around 2640 km².
