Aldis Gobzems (* 1978 ) is a Latvian lawyer and politician .

Life

Aldis Gobzems was born in 1978 in what was then the Latvian SSR . After graduating from school, he completed a law degree at the University of Latvia in 2003 . By representing the victims of the supermarket collapse in Riga , he was able to draw national attention for the first time.

Political career

Aldis Gobzems was nominated by KPV LV in the parliamentary elections in Latvia in 2018 as a candidate for the office of Prime Minister. Since they were immediately drawn into the Latvian Parliament ( Saeima ) as the second strongest force with 16 members , Gobzems was commissioned to form a government after Jānis Bordāns had failed. But even he did not succeed in obtaining a government majority. The simultaneous withdrawal of his license to practice as a lawyer also had a negative effect on this attempt.

His party eventually joined the Kariņš government as a junior partner . Due to ongoing tensions in the party and faction over this decision, which were also fueled by Aldis Gobzems, he was expelled from both in February 2019. Since then he has been a non-attached member of parliament.

Private

Aldis Gobzems has been married since 2015. He has a daughter (* 2016) with his wife Krista and was expecting the birth of a son in 2018.
