Jānis Bordāns (born June 21, 1967 in Balvi ) is a Latvian politician of the Jaunā konservatīvā partija (JKP), of which he is chairman. From 2012 to 2014 he was Minister of Justice of his country and again since January 2019.

Life

Bordāns was born in 1967 in the northeast of what was then the Latvian SSR . After graduating from school in Riga in 1985, he studied law at the University of Latvia and then worked as a lawyer in Latvia. After regaining state independence, he helped build the independent Latvian legal system and worked in the civil service.

Bordāns is married and has three sons.

Political career

Between 1994 and 1995 he was a member of the 5th Saeima of the Republic of Latvia for a short time . He later worked as an employee of Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and in the Latvian Ministry of Justice.

As the successor to Gaidis Bērziņš , he was appointed Minister of Justice of Latvia in the Dombrovskis III cabinet on July 5, 2012 . In this context he joined the Nacionālā apvienība "Visu Latvijai!" - “Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK” who nominated him. In November 3013, however, he was recalled from office and expelled from the party.

Since 2014 he has been a party member of the Jaunā konservatīvā partija (JKP). For this he stood in the parliamentary election 2018 as chairman and top candidate. The JKP was the third strongest force in these elections with 13.6% of the vote and Bordāns succeeded as one of 16 members of the Saeima. In the center-right cabinet of Krišjānis Kariņšs he was reappointed Minister of Justice.
