When the supermarket collapsed in Riga on the evening of November 21, 2013, around 6 p.m. local time, the roof structure of the Maxima -XX supermarket in the Riga district of Zolitūde collapsed. There were several hundred people in the building. Another part of the roof collapsed during the rescue work. At least 54 people were killed in the accident.

The collapse of the roof is attributed to the construction of a green area on the roof. The XX supermarket was only opened in 2011. It is the largest civil catastrophe in the history of the country of Latvia since the restoration of independence in 1991. The Latvian government took political responsibility for the accident; On November 27, 2013, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis announced his resignation.

The responsible construction company Re & Re won a silver medal in the competition of the Latvian Construction Industry Association (Latvijas Būvnieku asociācija) on March 30, 2012 for the construction of the building. The management of the building had since the completion in 2011 owned by the Canadian-based holding company -Company Homburg International Group and its subsidiary, Homburg Volda from Lithuania . The architecture firm was the Kubs company . When the roof collapsed, the sales area of the supermarket was 4750 m².

The double X in the name is not a proper name, but classifies the size of the branch. For the Maxima retail chain, it ranges from the smallest type X to the hypermarket type XXX .

On November 28, 2013, a group of experts from Re & Re published a preliminary report on the cause of the accident. According to this, the collapse was due to a gross error in the structural planning phase of the building. Due to incorrect load assumptions, the lower nodes of the trusses were dimensioned too weak. On April 15 and 16, 2014, the two remaining trusses were brought to collapse in a measuring test under increasing load.

Victim

Three firefighters were killed during the rescue work. In addition to the 54 dead, 39 people with some serious injuries were treated in hospitals. On November 28, the social services had data on 37 children whose at least one parent died or was injured in the collapse.
