Make Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Make Castle (also called Castell Meredydd or Maredudds Castle) is a ruined castle in the County Borough of Caerphilly in Wales . Listed as a Scheduled Monument , the ruin is the only stone castle in Gwent to be built by the local Welsh princes.

history

The castle was built after 1217 by Morgan ap Hywel , the Welsh Lord of Caerleon , after losing Caerleon Castle . In 1236 it was conquered by Gilbert Marshal , who had some extensions made, but then on the orders of King Henry III. had to give it back to Morgan. Morgan's heir and successor Maredudd ap Gruffudd had the castle expanded, but it was conquered by Gilbert de Clare in 1266 when he occupied the Welsh rule of Senghenydd . With the construction of nearby Caerphilly Castle , the little castle became meaningless and fell into disrepair.

investment

The ruins are located on two tree-lined crags between the villages of Upper and Lower Make, about 5 km east of the town of Caerphilly . On the eastern tip there is the ruin of a small round keep , on the larger western hill there was a living hall. This main castle was separated by a deep moat and a wall from the large, north-facing outer castle , which was probably built under Gilbert Marshal. The castle was only weakly fortified and was strategically unfavorable, as it could be seen from higher ground in the north.
