Maredudd ap Gruffudd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maredudd ap Gruffudd (also Merdudd ap Gruffudd or Maredudd ap Gruffydd ) († 1270 ) was the last lord of the Welsh rule Gwynllŵg in Gwent .

origin

Maredudd ap Gruffud was a descendant of Iorwerths from Owain , but his exact relationship to Morgan ap Hywel , from whom he inherited parts of Caerleon in 1248, is disputed. According to one theory, he was a grandson of Morgan, because his mother Gwerfyl was his daughter. His father is said to have been Gruffudd, a son of Maredudd Gethin, a son of Lord Rhys and his wife Gwenllian, a daughter of Hywel from Iorwerth , after which his father and mother were cousins. According to other theories, his mother was a daughter of Iorwerth from Owain's youngest son Morgan, or he was a cousin of Morgan ap Hywel as the son of Iorwerth's son Gruffudd from Iorwerth.

Inheritance and displacement by Gilbert de Clare

Maredudd inherited the two commotes from Gwynllŵg, which were north of Wentloog, in addition he owned Edelgan and Llefnydd near Caerleon . However, he was not in possession of Caerleon Castle , so that his main seat was Make Castle , which is also named after him Maredudds Castle . He was able to acquire further lands near Newport , but in 1266 Gilbert de Clare , Lord of Glamorganmachen Castle. He had acquired Marshal Caerleon through purchase and exchange from the daughters and heiresses of Sybil Marshal and now claimed supremacy over Gwynllŵg. To do this, de Clare began building Caerphilly Castle , which almost immediately bordered Maredudd's area. Maredudd turned to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd , who as Prince of Wales energetically with King Henry III. protested against de Clare's actions. In July 1269, however, his son Eduard decided as the highest English feudal lord in Wales that de Clare as Lord of Caerleon was in the right against his subject Maredudd. Thereupon Llywelyn raided the north of Glamorgan in October 1270 and destroyed the Caerphilly Castle, which was under construction. Gilbert de Clare was able to hold his own against Llywelyn. Maredudd had to flee and died at the end of the year in Hirfryn in Ystrad Tywi .

Descendants

Morgan ap Maredudd , a leader of the Welsh revolt of 1294, was believed to be a son of Maredudd ap Gruffudd.
