description

Andara is now one in the era of the Soviet Union created housing estate (in the Russian language MICRODISTRICT ). The name is derived from the French solitude , German for loneliness or desolation . Anna Ulrike von Vietinghoff , who owned the estate here, gave it its name. The area, characterized by huts and single-family houses at the beginning of the 20th century, was built on with multi-family houses from the 1930s. After the Second World War , when Latvia was annexed to the Soviet Union, mainly Russians settled in the district. In the mid-1980s, the 8- and 9-storey building of the standard type 119, which was widespread in the Soviet Union, began .

The area is divided into the parts Zolitūde 1 and Zolitūde 2 , the most important main streets are called Kārļa Ulmaņa, Lielirbes, Zolitūdes, Rostokas and Anniņmuižas. It is connected to the railway line between Riga and the beach suburb of Jūrmala through two stations, Zolitūde and Imanta . The quick access to the Baltic Sea beach and the proximity to the airport make Zolitūde an attractive residential area from a geographical point of view.

The Latvian telephone company Lattelecom connected Zolitūde to the Internet in January 2009 as the first residential area in the country with fiber optic lines (100 Mbit / s).

In November 2013, Zolitūde hit international headlines when the roof of a supermarket collapsed, burying more than 50 people under it. The disaster represents the biggest disaster in Latvia since independence from the Soviet Union.
