The Lancones district is located in the Sullana province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 3, 1917. It has an area of ​​2189.35 km². At the 2017 census, there were 12,119 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 12,608, in 2007 13,119. The administrative center is the 120  m high village of Lancones with 515 inhabitants (as of 2017). With the construction of the Poechos dam , the district capital had to be relocated to the Pampas de Zapallal in January 1976 and is located there within the neighboring district of Querecotillo . Lancones is west of the Poechos reservoir, 32 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Sullana . The landscape in the southwest of the district is dominated by desert and semi-desert vegetation. In the north there are several ridges.

Geographical location

The district of Lancones is located in the northeast of the province of Sullana. It has a length in north-south direction of about 60 km and a maximum width of about 50 km. The Río Chira crosses the district in a south-southwest direction. The Poechos reservoir is located in the south of the district.

The Lancones district borders Ecuador in the north . In the west, the district borders on the neighboring districts of Suyo ( Ayabaca Province ) and Las Lomas ( Province of Piura ), in the south on the districts Sullana and Querecotillo, in the west on the Marcavelica district and in the northwest on the Casitas ( Contralmirante Villar province ) and San districts Jacinto ( Tumbes Province ).
