The Querecotillo district is located in the Sullana province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was probably founded on June 21, 1825. It has an area of 270.08 km². At the 2017 census, there were 26,395 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 22,437, in 2007 24,452. The administrative center is the 65 m high town of Querecotillo with 13,173 inhabitants (as of 2017). Querecotillo is located on the north bank of the Río Chira about 8 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Sullana . The landscape is dominated by desert vegetation. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced along the course of the Río Chira. In the summer months from January to March, temperatures reach 30 to 37 ° C. During this time, precipitation falls infrequently. Winters are usually cool.
Geographical location
The Querecotillo district is located in the central southeast of the Sullana province. It has a longitudinal extension in SSW-NNE direction of 27 km and a maximum width of 12 km. The Río Chira flows along the southeastern district boundary to the southwest. It is dammed in the northeast of the district by the Poechos dam.
The Querecotillo district is bordered to the west by the district Marcavelica , on the north by the district Lancones , in the southeast of the district Sullana and in the extreme southwest of the district Salitral .
