The Marcavelica district is located in the Sullana province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on March 25, 1952. It has an area of 1687.98 km². In the 2017 census, 29,569 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 20,992, in 2007 26,031. The administrative center is the 48 m high small town Marcavelica with 3458 inhabitants (as of 2017). Marcavelica is located on the north bank of the Río Chira . The provincial capital Sullana is 2.5 km further south on the opposite bank.
Geographical location
The Marcavelica district is located in the extreme northwest of the Sullana province. The district has a length in north-south direction of about 80 km and a maximum width of about 30 km. The Río Chira runs along the southern district boundary to the west. The course of the Río Saman, a right tributary of the Río Chira, crosses the southern part of the district in a southerly direction. The Coto de Caza El Angolo ridge rises up to 1400 m in the north.
The Marcavelica district is bordered to the west by the Ignacio Escudero , La Brea , Pariñas , El Alto and Máncora districts (the last four in the Talara province ), to the north by the Canoas de Punta Sal and Casitas districts (both in the Contralmirante Villar province ) , to the east to the districts of Lancones , Querecotillo and Salitral , to the south to the districts of Sullana and Miguel Checa and to the extreme southwest to the district of La Huaca ( province of Paita ).
