The Canoas de Punta Sal district is located in the Contralmirante Villar province of the Tumbes region in the far northwest of Peru . The district was formed on April 3, 2006 from parts of the Tumbes district. The Canoas de Punta Sal district has an area of 623.34 km². The 2017 census counted 6,336 inhabitants. Ten years earlier, the population was 4429. The administrative seat of the district is the small town of Cancas by the sea with 5034 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cancas is 68 km southwest of the regional capital Tumbes and 40 km southwest of the provincial capital Zorritos . The seaside resort of Punta Sal is about 6 km southwest of Cancas.
Geographical location
The Canoas de Punta Sal district is located on the Pacific coast in the southwest of the Contralmirante Villar province. It extends over a semi-desert landscape. The district has an approximately 30 km long coastline and extends about 25 km inland. There are several beaches on the coast. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) runs along the coast of the district. In the northeast, the Canoas de Punta Sal district borders on the Zorritos district , in the southeast on the Casitas district , in the south on the Marcavelica district ( Sullana province ) and in the southwest on the Máncora district ( Talara province ).
