The Miguel Checa district is located in the Sullana province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on November 10, 1950. The district was named after Miguel Checa (1861-1935), a Peruvian agricultural pioneer in the area. The district has an area of ​​477 km². At the 2017 census, 9,036 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 5525, in 2007 7446. The administrative center is the 70  m high town of Sojo with 4403 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sojo is located south of the westward flowing Río Chira , about 15 km west of the provincial capital Sullana . Near Sojo is the Casona de Sojo, a building designed by a Mexican architect and built in 1910 on behalf of Miguel Checa. The building has been a national monument since 1974.

Geographical location

The Miguel Checa district is located in the extreme south of the Sullana province. It has a maximum length in north-south direction of about 43 km and a maximum width of about 15 km. The Río Chira runs along the northern district boundary to the west. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the course of the river. The settlement areas in the district are also located there. The south of the district is in the coastal desert of northwestern Peru. The road connection from Piura to Paita crosses this area in a westerly direction.

The Miguel Checa district is bordered to the west by the district La Huaca ( province Paita ), to the north by the district Marcavelica , in the northeast on the district Sullana , on the east by the districts of Piura , Veintiséis de Octubre and Catacaos , in the southeast of the district La Arena and in the extreme south to the La Unión district .
