The Province of Sechura is one of eight provinces in the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The province has an area of 6370.33 km². At the 2017 census, 79,177 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 42,568, in 2007 62,319. The provincial administration is located in the city of Sechura .
Geographical location
The province of Sechura is located on the Pacific coast in the southwest of the Piura region. It extends over the desert-like coastal plain and has an extent in SSW-NNE and WNW-OSE of about 100 km each. The lower reaches of the Río Piura and the Río Sechura flow through the area towards the sea. In the north of the province lies the Laguna La Niña salt lake. The Zona reservada Illescas nature reserve and bird sanctuary lies on the coast in the west of the province . The northwest of the province lies on the Bahía de Sechura Bay . The Panamericana trunk road (National Road 1N) from Piura to Chiclayo runs through the province in a north-south direction.
The province of Sechura borders the provinces Paita and Piura in the north and the province Lambayeque ( Lambayeque region ) in the southeast .
Administrative division
The province of Sechura is divided into six districts (distritos) . The district of Sechura is the seat of the provincial administration.
