Sechura is the capital of the Province of Sechura in the Piura region of northwestern Peru . It is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2017 census, 33,134 people lived in the city; 10 years earlier the population was 23,250. In the center of the city on the Plaza de Armas is the 17th century cathedral of Sechura, built in Spanish colonial style.

Geographical location

The city of Sechura is located on the south bank of the Río Sechura just 6 km from the Pacific coast. The city ​​is located at an altitude of 11  m in the coastal desert of northwest Peru ( Sechura Desert ). The regional capital Piura is located 45 km north-northeast of the city.
