James Bond (ornithologist)

The ornithologist James Bond

James Bond (born January 4, 1900 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † February 14, 1989 ibid ) was an American ornithologist , whose name inspired the author Ian Fleming to name his secret agent character James Bond .

Working as an ornithologist

James Bond was born in Philadelphia and worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences in the same city as curator of the bird collection there. He was an expert in the field of Caribbean bird species and published the first edition of the book Birds of the West Indies in 1936 , which is still considered the standard work and is available in the fifth edition. Until the publication of A Guide to the Birds of the West Indies in 1998 (Herbert Raffaele et al. ), Bond's book was the only one that dealt exclusively with the Caribbean bird fauna. Bond received the Musgrave Medal of the Institute of Jamaica (1952) and the William Brewster Medal of the American Ornithological Union (1954) for his Magnum Opus Field guide to birds of the West Indies: a guide to all the species of birds known from the Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles and Bahama Islands and the Leidy Medal of the Academy of Natural Sciences (1975). Bond often worked with Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee . He died at the age of 89 at Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia, of a long-standing cancer .

In 1953, Bond married Mary Fanning Wickham Porcher Lewis, the widow of a famous Philadelphia lawyer . In 1966 she published the book How 007 Got His Name: Mrs James Bond .

It is reported that Bond ate all of the birds he studied at least once.

Dedication names

Ariomma bondi

Bond collected numerous fish in Grenada as early as the 1920s . Among them, two new species were discovered that are named after him: Ariomma bondi Fowler 1930 and Malacoctenus bondi Fowler 1930

In 1937 Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee (1901-1984) described the new species Dicrurus bondi , which was later downgraded to a subspecies of the gray drongo ( Dicrurus leucophaeus bondi ). A subspecies of the Sabia thrush was named after Bond by Herbert Girton Deignan (1906–1968) in 1951 : Turdus fumigatus bondi . Kenneth Carroll Parkes (1922–2007) and Allan Robert Phillips (1914–1996) dedicated a subspecies of the barn owl to Bond in 1978: Tyto alba bondi .

Bond as namesake

Ian Fleming, who worked as an avid birdwatcher, when he was in Jamaica lived, knew Bonds book and chose the name of its author for the protagonist of his story Casino Royale , because the name seemed to him "as ordinary as possible." Fleming wrote Bond's wife: "It struck me that this short, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and above all masculine name was exactly what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born." Fleming processed parts of the work in the short story For Your Eyes Only, a precise description of the appearance and courtship behavior of the doctor humming-bird ( Trochilus polytmus ).

In the twentieth film in the James Bond series ( Die Another Day ) , the secret agent James Bond in Cuba poses as an ornithologist and has the real James Bond's book with him.

Ian Fleming got to know the namesake of his fictional agent personally on February 5, 1964. The ornithologist visited him at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica. As a gift, Ian Fleming gave the ornithologist his latest James Bond novel, which bore the dedication “ To the real James Bond, from the thief of his identity ” (German: “ To the real James Bond from the thief of his identity ”).

This book sold for $ 84,000 in December 2008 .
