The mirror warbler ( Xenoligea montana ) is a small songbird and the only member of the genus Xenoligea . The taxonomic affiliation is still uncertain (incertae sedis). The species is currently partially placed in the family of the wood warbler (Parulidae), but seems to belong to the Tangaren (Thraupidae). The distribution area is in Haiti and the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola . The IUCN has listed the species as "endangered" (vulnerable) since 1994.

features

Mirror wood warbler reach a body length of 14.5 centimeters. The wing length is 6.75 to 6.9 centimeters in the male; in the female 6.6 to 6.9 centimeters. In appearance they are similar to the gray-breasted warbler ( Microligea palustris ). Adult males have dark gray head plumage with a white interrupted eye ring, blackish reins and a white, concise line across the reins. The plumage below the eyes is streaked with white short lines and weak on the ear covers. The upper part of the mantle is dark gray; the lower and the upper side plumage light greenish. The wings are blackish and the thumb wings and inner hand wings are outlined in dark gray. The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth hand wings are outlined in white and the arm wings have light green outer edges. The underside plumage is white with washed-out gray flanks and sides of the chest. The beak and legs are black. The female resembles the male in appearance.

Occurrence, nutrition and reproduction

The distribution area is in the Massif de la Hotte and Massif de la Selle in Haiti as well as in the Cordillera Central mountain range, in the Sierra de Baoruco mountains and on the south side of Sierra de Neiba in the Dominican Republic. Mirror warbler inhabit thickets and bushes in clearings in pristine mountain forests, usually above 1200 meters and mostly at altitudes of 1300 to 1800 meters. Sometimes they can also be found in pine forests with dense undergrowth.

On their forays they can often be seen in the company of the birds, the gray-breasted warbler and the flycatcher vireo ( Vireo nanus ). They mainly feed on insects , other invertebrates and seeds . They seem to play an important role for the Trema micrantha plant . They make their nest well hidden on the ground or close to the ground. There are no studies on the breeding season, incubation or nestling time.
