The buff-winged starfrontlet ( Coeligena lutetiae ) or sometimes Braunschwingenmusketier is a species of bird in the family of hummingbirds (Trochilidae). The species has a large range that covers about 64,000 square kilometers in the South American countries of Colombia , Ecuador, and Peru . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .
features
The pale-winged Andean hummingbird reaches a body length of about 13.5 to 14 centimeters. The long, slender beak becomes about 30 to 25 millimeters long. The male is black in the upper third. In the second and third third, this changes into the cinnamon-colored. The forehead and underside are glittering dark green. There is a purple spot on the male's neck. In the female, the spot is rust-brown. The male's forked tail is bronze-black, while the female has a bronze-green shimmer. The rest of the female's body is green.
Habitat
The hummingbird can be found in the forest when foraging. He prefers smaller forests and nearby areas with shrubs. The bird can be found at altitudes between 2600 and 3600 meters.
behavior
The bird feeds mainly on nectar. He hovers standing in the air and explores the flowers. The hummingbird is territorially fixated on its feeding area. The breeding season in the area around Puracé was determined to be February.
Subspecies
So far, two subspecies are known.
- Coeligena lutetiae lutetiae ( Delattre & Bourcier , 1846)
- Coeligena lutetiae albimaculata Sanchez Oses , 2006
Its distribution areas are the central Andes of Colombia via Ecuador to the extreme north of Peru.
Etymology and history of research
Adolphe Delattre and Jules Bourcier described the pale-winged Andean hummingbird under the name Trochilus Lutetiæ . The type specimen came from Puracé near Popayán . Only later was the genus Coeligena added. The word “Coeligena” is derived from the Latin words “coelum” or “caelum” for “heaven” and “genus” for “descendant”. The word "lutetiae" is dedicated to Louis Philippe Albert d'Orléans, comte de Paris (1838-1894), Lutetia being the ancient name for Paris. The word "albimaculata" is made up of the Latin words "albus" for "white" and "maculatus" for "speckled".
