Subspecies

So far, five subspecies are known.

  • Amazilia beryllina viola ( Miller, W , 1905) - This subspecies occurs in southeastern Arizona as well as western and northwestern Mexico.
  • Amazilia beryllina. beryllina ( Deppe , 1830) - The nominate form occurs in the central area of Oaxaca .
  • Amazilia beryllina lichtensteini Moore, RT , 1950 - This subspecies is common in the eastern part of Oaxaca and western Chiapa .
  • Amazilia beryllina sumichrasti Salvin , 1891 - This subspecies occurs in central and southern Chiapas.
  • Amazilia beryllina devillei ( Bourcier & Mulsant , 1848) - The distribution area of this subspecies extends over the countries of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Etymology and history of research

Pierre Guillaume Deppe published the beryl lamacilia under the name Trochilus beryllinus . In 1843 René Primevère Lesson introduced the new generic name Amazilia for the gold - masked hummingbird , the striped - tailed hummingbird , the cinnamon-bellied hummingbird (syn .: Ornysmia cinnamomea ), the blue-throated star hummingbird (syn .: Ornymia rufula ) and the longuemare sun nymph . He did not mention the rust-bellied amazilia ( Amazilia amazilia ). The name comes from a novel by Jean-François Marmontel , who reported on an Inca heroine named Amazili in Les Incas, Ou La Destruction De L'empire Du Pérou . »Beryllinus« is the Latin word for » beryl , crystalline«. The word can also be derived from the Greek "bēryllos βηρυλλος ". "Viola" is the Latin word for "violet". "Lichtensteini" is dedicated to Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein . “Sumichrasti” is dedicated to his collector Adrien Jean Louis François Sumichrast . Finally, »devillei« honors  Émile Deville .
