The blue-throated star hummingbird ( Tilmatura dupontii ) or sometimes Dupont's hummingbird is a species of bird from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae). The species has a large range that covers about 290,000 square kilometers in the Central American countries of Mexico , Guatemala , El Salvador , Honduras, and Nicaragua . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .

features

The male blue-throated star hummingbird reaches a body length of around 9 to 10 centimeters, while the female is slightly smaller at around 6.5 to 7.5 centimeters. The straight, black beak is about the size of the head. Males and females are very different. The male's forked tail is relatively long. The throat shines blue to purple-blue. The crown and around the ears (auricular) are green. Postocular (behind the eyes) there is a white spot. The neck and top are green with square spots on the side and on the torso. The chest forms a white band below the throat. The rest of the base is dark green. The outer control feathers of the black tail are spotted white and have red-brown stripes. The female has a tail that is divided and rounded on both sides. The face, neck and lower part are cinnamon to pale cinnamon with a dark line near the eyes. There is also a pale postocular spot. The crown, the neck and the upper part are green like the male. White spots adorn the plumage on the side. The inner control feathers are green, the outer ones black and streaked with white and cinnamon stains.

Habitat

Distribution area of the blue-throated star hummingbird

The hummingbird prefers to move in moist to semi-arid forest edges, scrubby secondary vegetation and poor woodland, which often consists of oak trees . It can be found at altitudes between 750 and 2500 meters. You can observe the bird from central and southern Mexico, over the plateaus of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, as well as in northern Nicaragua.

behavior

For feeding, he slowly hovers bees right in front of the flower. While eating, it tilts its tail. In doing so, it moves in a range that extends from the ground to the treetop. When hunting for insects, he makes long flights between open branches.

Subspecies

No subspecies of the blue-throated star hummingbird are known at the moment. The species is therefore considered to be monotypical .

Etymology and history of research

René Primevère Lesson described the species under the name Ornismya dupontii . The type specimen came from Mexico. It was not until 1854 that Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach added it to the Tilmatura genus , as Tryphaena , a genus name used by John Gould, was already occupied by Ferdinand Ochsenheimer and Georg Friedrich Treitschke . "Dupontii" is most likely dedicated to the natural produce dealer, entomologist Richard Henry Puech dit Dupont (1798–1873), a brother of Léonard Puech dit Dupont (1795–1828).
