Pierre Guillaume Deppe

Pierre Guillaume Deppe mostly Wilhelm Deppe (* March 8, 1800 in Berlin ; † December 15, 1844 there ) was a German rendant at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin. He was the author of several bird names that were new to science.

Live and act

Deppe was baptized on March 30, 1800 by Pastor Sincillion in the French Church in Berlin. His father Ferdinand Erneste Pierre Deppe, who was a trader, came from Leistenau in West Prussia . His mother Magdelaine Fréderique geb. Houfselle came from Königsberg .

On March 1, 1828, his brother turned Ferdinand Deppe in the Allgemeine Zeitung an ad in which he wrote:

"Since he is leaving Berlin on March 10th, and at the end of April this year J. intends to embark in Bordeaux, so he requests that the communications to be made to him be sent to himself here very soon, or to his authorized brother Wilhelm Deppe after the time of his departure. "

Due to the precarious financial situation of the Berlin museum, it was only able to buy a little material from Ferdinand Deppe's second trip to Mexico. Ferdinand Deppe was instructed in accordance with the highest cabinet rules of June 30, 1829 not to send any more natural history material on account of the ministry. In order to support his brother in his difficult financial situation, Wilhelm published price lists of mammals, birds, amphibians, fish and crabs, which had been collected by Messrs. Deppe and Schiede in Mexico, and from the authorized representative in Berlin against cash payment in 1830 in Preuss. Courant to be obtained . The success of this price list was, however, daunting. In 1863 Jean Louis Cabanis and August Carl Eduard Baldamus published a reprint of the rare price list in the Journal für Ornithologie , which appeared under the title Lichtenstein's Price Directory of Mexican Birds etc. from 1830 . In the preface to the reprint, they wrote:

“[In response to multiple requests, we are giving a print of a rare publication which is important for the priority of some Mexican bird species. Lichtenstein's index is contained on three square pages, each of which is divided into two columns. The print is almost similar to the original. A criticism of the new species, based on the type in the Berlin Museum, will be provided in a later issue of this journal. D. Ed.] "

The title led to confusion in academia, as it identified Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein as the author, although Deppe was the actual author of the work. In the price list, Deppe announced a publication by Lichtenstein, Prodromus Faunae Mexicanae , which was never published. For example, Robert Thomas Moore named a subspecies of the beryl lamazily ( Amazilia beryllina lichtensteini ) on the grounds:

"Named in honor of the Great German ornithologist, who described many forms of Mexican birds, including the nominate race of this species."

Of the 169 exhibits it offered, 153 were bird hides, eight reptiles, four mammals, two amphibians, a fish and a shrimp. Hobart Muir Smith looked at the herpetological exhibits on the price list in 1971 and identified four names that might have relevance according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature , but which are now all regarded as nouns nudum .

Finally, Deppe offered other antiques from Mexico and wrote:

“With the undersigned there is one from Ferd. Deppe from Mexico sent a collection of antique vessels, utensils, etc. (53 numbers) for the price of 58 Friedrichsd'or for sale. "

On the original price list in the Berlin Museum of Natural History, it also offers an unspecified ...

"Collection of rare Californian splendid garments of all kinds, and carved bone work, altogether 20 numbers"

... his brother for sale. He asked for 60 Friedrichsdor as the price .

In February 1832 he submitted an application for promotion to the then Minister of Culture Karl vom Stein zum Altenstein and at the same time gave an overview of the travel activities of his brother Ferdinand and his friend Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede .

After his death, Deppe was buried on December 19, 1844 in the French cemetery in Berlin.

Remarks

  1. Christiane Quaisser and André-Alexander Weller write in their treatise on the taxonomic identity of Trochilus verticalis, however, Due to his profession, Deppe deals only with technical aspects of publications and sales and was not involved in taxonomic questions .
