August Carl Eduard Baldamus (1812-1893) in 1856

August Carl Eduard Baldamus (short: Eduard Baldamus ; born April 18, 1812 in Giersleben ; † October 30, 1893 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German ornithologist , teacher and Protestant theologian .

Life

The father was the cantor and teacher Johann Friedrich Baldamus. The mother's name was Wilhelmine and was born in Döring. In 1826 the father died, so that the young high school student Eduard was forced to take care of his own living at an early age. He attended grammar schools in Aschersleben and Koethen and, after having passed the Abitur, studied Protestant theology at the University of Berlin in 1833 . During his last year of study he held the position of educator and teacher in the house of Count Perponcher. In 1838 he became a teacher at the grammar school and the secondary school for girls in Koethen . Finally, in 1849 he became pastor in Diebzig and in 1858 in Osternienburg . After taking a break in 1865, he moved to Halle , where he retired in 1868 . The next move to Coburg followed in 1870 . Two of his wives died. In 1893 he moved to Wolfenbüttel with his third wife to spend their old age with one of his daughters. Here he soon died of a stroke.

Baldamus the ornithologist

Even in his earliest youth, Baldamus was fascinated by the bird world in forests and fields. Since bird trapping was not regulated at that time, the Vogelherd was one of his most popular research areas. He retained his passion for birds during his time as a theologian. With his hobby he was in good tradition with other theologians such as the pastor Christian Ludwig Brehm (1787–1864), the Austrian father Blasius Hanf (1808–1892) and the Bavarian pastor Andreas Johannes Jäckel (1822–1885). Johann Andreas Naumann (1744–1826) and his sons Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780–1857) and Carl Andreas Naumann (1786–1854) certainly had the greatest influence on his ornithological career . The bond with the Naumanns also manifested itself in his article The Three Naumanns. A family of naturalists from 1866 and his speech at the unveiling of the Naumannd monument in 1880, which had been planned under his patronage 33 years earlier. This speech was printed in the Ornithologische Centralblatt in 1880 . In addition to his theological lectures, he attended zoological lectures with Martin Hinrich Carl Lichtenstein (1780–1857), musicological lectures with Professor Adolf Bernhard Marx (1795–1866) and various philological lectures. All of these trainings supported his passion, the study of ornithology.

From 1842 Baldamus made numerous ornithological trips and so he laid the basis for a considerable egg collection. At the invitation of Archduke Stefan Franz Viktor of Austria , he visited the Lower Danube in 1847 (the Carpathian breakthrough of the Danube in the Iron Gate to the mouth of the Black Sea ), which was considered an Eldorado for bird lovers. Almost every year he went on smaller and larger excursions. In 1867 he visited the Alps of the Upper and Lower Engadine . Further trips took him to the North Sea islands of Schleswig-Holstein , Belgium, northern France and northern Italy.

Due to his commitment he was in contact with many well-known ornithologists of his time. In addition to Brehm and his sons, Johann Heinrich Blasius (1809–1870) and his sons Rudolf (1842–1907) and Wilhelm (1845–1912) and Adolph Nehrkorn (1841–1916) were among his circle of friends. His ties to his homeland led to the fact that he declined both the leadership of an expedition by Baron Johann Wilhelm von Müller (1824–1866) to Sudan and to remain in Paris at the request of Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte (1803–1857). In 1858 he was promoted to Dr. phil. hon. causa appointed. From April 4 to 14, 1884, the “First International Ornithological Congress” took place in Vienna, in which Baldamus took part.

In the tradition of Naumann, his scientific work focused on the avifauna of Europe and here he mainly concentrated on its reproductive history and oology . In his later days in Coburg, Baldamus mainly devoted himself to poultry farming. So he published two volumes between 1878 and 1881 with the title Handbuch der Federviehzucht , a work that was based on Lewis Wright's (1838–1905) book The illustrated book of poultry . In 1876 he published Vogelmärchen , a book that was translated into Russian by O. Grimm in 1879. His last work appeared shortly before his death in 1892 under the title The Life of the European Cuckoo , a species of bird that fascinated him throughout his life. Here Baldamus was also regarded internationally as a respected luminary .

In addition to ornithology, nature conservation was important to him and so he published Schützet die Vögel in 1868 . This work was also translated into French by Jules Eissen and L. Meunier in 1878 and was published under the title Protégez les oiseaux .

With many articles by other authors in the Naumannia , Baldamus took the liberty of commenting on these with his experiences in the form of footnotes.

Naumannia and the German Ornithological Society

In 1849 Baldamus founded the ornithological journal Naumannia , as the Rhea published by Ludwig Thienemann (1793-1858) . Magazine for the entire ornithology had to be discontinued after two issues. The magazine initially became the first official organ of the German Ornithological Society (DO-G).

In 1845 Baldamus suggested a meeting of some members of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors in Koethen with the aim of establishing an ornithological section . 32 ornithologists came to the first meeting. These were the harbingers for the establishment of the DO-G. From October 1st to 3rd, 1850, 12 ornithologists met in Leipzig and adopted the first provisional statutes of the DO-G. The u. a. the inspector of the natural history museum Robert Tobias , the doctor Ernst Schnürpel , the pastor Heinrich Zander (1800–1876), the rector Carl Wilhelm Gottfried Paeßler , the factory owner G. Heinrich Kunz , Professor Dr. Johann Friedrich Naumann, the natural scientist Richard Freiherr Koenig von und zu Warthausen (1830–1911), the landowner Johann Kratzsch (1809–1887), the licentiate Friedrich Wilhelm Assmann and Baldamus. Baldamus was elected provisional secretary and Kratsch was elected agent . Subject to the consent of those absent, Naumann, Zander, Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer (1809–1889), Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein (1780–1857) and Pastor Brehm were elected to the board.

From June 11th to 15th, 1851, the final statutes were finally adopted in Berlin. The DO-G was the first ornithological society at that time. At this meeting among those present this time were u. a. also Lichtenstein, Chr. L. Brehm, E. von Homeyer, Thienemann, Casimir Graf von Wodzicki (1816–1889), Gustav Hartlaub (1814–1900), Niels Kjærbølling (1806–1871), Jean Louis Cabanis (1816–1906) , Theobald Johannes Krüper (1829–1917) and Prince Bogusław Radziwiłł (1809–1873). Baldamus was confirmed as secretary and elected to the editorial committee along with Naumann and Cabanis.

At the sixth meeting of the Society in 1852, which took place from July 5th to 9th in Altenburg, Baldamus was presented with the DO-G honorary diploma together with Zander and von Homeyer.

The Naumannia was primarily dedicated to the European avifauna and its focus was in the areas of oology and nidology , fields that primarily served the research area of its editor Baldamus. The one-sided direction of research contradicted the ideas of Cabanis, Hartlaub and Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782–1867). It led to irreconcilable differences of opinion and finally, in 1853, to the publication of a competing journal , the Journal of Ornithology, by Cabanis. At the eighth annual meeting in Gotha in 1854, the journal for ornithology was finally accepted as an additional second organ of the DO-G alongside the Naumannia. Cabanis wrote in his minutes of the meeting:

"... although the owner of" Naumannia ", Mr. Pastor Baldamus, when his magazine first appeared in 1849, without consulting an ornithologists' meeting, and therefore only out of his own power, put the phrase "Organ des Deutschen Ornithologen-Verein" on the title page, and 2 years later added it to the "Articles of Association" of the company applied for. "

As the journal of ornithology became more and more popular among scholars, despite Baldamus' attempts to save his journal, naumannia became less and less important. The last edition of the magazine finally appeared in 1858. From 1860 to 1866, both Cabanis and Baldamus were editors of the Journal of Ornithology. At that time it said on the cover sheet:

"Journal for ornithology - a central organ for the entire ornithology. At the same time as a continuation of the magazine Naumannia "

The dispute between Cabanis and his followers and Baldamus and his camp smoldered further, so that in 1866 Cabanis launched a call for the establishment of a second society called the "German Ornithological Society". Baldamus was present at the first meeting of the new society, but only as a guest. He did not become a member of the Society.

Even in the old society his support waned. Baldamus became apathetic and so he was hired by Dr. Bernard Altum (1824–1900) replaced as secretary. After Altum had passed the post to his pupil Ferdinand Freiherr von Droste zu Hülshoff (1841–1874) after a short period of office due to overwork , he tried to claim the company's assets from Baldamus. At the 17th meeting in Kassel from May 18 to 21, 1869 it was decided to appeal one last time to Baldamus' honor. In addition, at this meeting his behavior with regard to a monument to Naumann was criticized, a project that Baldamus had already suggested in October 1850. In spite of all the criticism, on November 6, 1880, he gave the ceremonial address for the erection of the Naumann monument in the Köthen palace gardens.

It was not until 1876 that the two societies finally reunite. Baldamus no longer had any meaning in the new society.

In 1866 the British Ornithologists' Union made him an honorary member of the Society.
