Johann Andreas Naumann (born April 13, 1744 in Ziebigk near Köthen ; † May 15, 1826 there ) was an important German ornithologist .

Life

Johann Andreas Naumann came from a family of farmers who owned an estate in Ziebigk. At the age of 15, he lost his father and had to drop out of school to help his mother run the estate. His father and grandfather were interested in catching birds; he himself always carried a shotgun when working in the fields. In addition to hunting the birds, he was also interested in their appearance and behavior. Johann Andreas Naumann was the father of Johann Friedrich Naumann and Carl Andreas Naumann and possibly another son.

Others

The Naumann bird collection , which was initiated by Johann Andreas Naumann and continued by Johann Friedrich Naumann, is now in the Naumann Museum in Köthen. It is the only known collection of natural objects from the Biedermeier period that has been preserved in its original form. The red chalk falcon ( Falco naumanni ) was named after Naumann by Johann Gottlieb Fleischer . The Naumann thrush ( Turdus naumanni ) was also named after Johann Andreas Naumann.
