Andreas Johannes Jäckel (1822–1885)

Andreas Johannes Jäckel (born January 6, 1822 in Nuremberg ; † July 12, 1885 in Windsheim ) was a German zoologist and theologian. His research focus was on ornithology (ornithology) and ichthyology (ichthyology).

Live and act

As the son of the copper printer and Stadtkirchner Johann Jakob Jäckel and his wife Regine Luise geb. Wirth Jäckel was born in the sacristan's house in St. Egidien . Despite the fact that Jäckel had ten siblings, his parents made it possible for him to attend the humanistic Melanchthon grammar school in Nuremberg . After leaving school, he studied Protestant theology at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen . Here he also attended lectures in the natural sciences. In 1842 he became a member of the Onoldia Corps . After completing his studies in 1845, he took up his first vicar position in Roth . A year later in 1846 he got his ordination in Ansbach . After his successful employment examination, he became parish administrator in Sulz Abbey in 1850 . After further stations in Oberampfrach , Wendelstein and Ammerndorf , he took up his first pastor's position in Neuhaus an der Aisch in 1853 . While still serving as vicar in Wendelstein, he married Eleonora Margaretha Barbara Sabina Sommer from Nuremberg on November 24, 1850, who finally died on January 5, 1883 after being paralyzed in spring 1880. The marriage resulted in three sons and four daughters, two of whom died at an early age. One daughter was called Auguste and married a Mr. Hornschuch. In 1861 Jäckel was transferred to Sommersdorf - Thann and hoped to recover from the malaria he had contracted in the swamps and ponds around Neuhaus. Jäckel took up his last position as pastor in Bad Windsheim in 1869.

Scientific work

As a teenager, he often visited the Vogelherd in Nuremberg's Reichswald or the bird women at the Schönen Brunnen to buy rare birds there. The family kept a variety of songbirds in cages to enjoy their song. Jackel himself studied these birds and began to draw them at an early age. During this time, he also received a lot of inspiration for his studies from the famous family of researchers and engravers around Jacob Sturm (1771–1848), as well as his sons Johann Heinrich Christian Friedrich Sturm (1805–1862) and Johann Wilhelm Sturm (1808–1865) . Since Nuremberg was a stronghold of Bavarian natural sciences at this time, researchers such as Johann Wolf (1765–1824), Bernhard Meyer (1767–1836), Johann Baptist von Spix (1781–1826), Karl Michahelles (1807–1834) or Carl Wilhelm Hahn (1786–1835) had a great deal of influence on the young Jäckel.

After all, it was the pond and swamp area around Neuhaus that advanced him in his ornithological research. The area was also known as the Jäckelsche Weihergebiet among older ornithologists . During his numerous observation tours of the ponds, he fell ill with malaria, which confined him to bed for 16 months. His first publication appeared in 1848 in the specialist journal Isis , which was edited by Lorenz Oken (1779-1851). In contributions to the ornithology of Franconia he meticulously listed 234 species of birds that have been observed or shot in Franconia to date. He was self-confident enough to question the analyzes of alpine masters such as Christian Ludwig Brehm (1787–1864) and Heinrich Carl Küster (1807–1876). In the journal Naumannia from August Carl Eduard Baldamus (1812-1893) he reported his ornithological annual reports from Bavaria almost in diary form . In his publication on The Birds of the Lower Aisch, Seebach and Aurachgrunds from 1863, Jäckel raved about the area around Neuhaus.

For many years Jäckel collected every imaginable material for a book about the avifauna in Bavaria. He sent the manuscript to Victor von Tschusi zu Schmidhoffen (1847–1924) in 1882 and complained in his letter that no publisher wanted to print the work and that he was unable to finance it out of his own pocket. Posthumously , his wish came true. With a foreword and comments by Rudolf Blasius (1842–1907) and the support of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the Systematic Overview of the Birds of Bavaria was finally published in 1891 . The Secret Medical Councilor Joseph von Kerschensteiner (1831–1896) and the then Minister of Education, Ludwig August von Müller (1846–1895), played a major role in the implementation of the project .

Jäckel's publications dealt primarily with bird, mammal and fish studies in his home country. He devoted all of his free time to the local fauna. He was not considered a visionary with daring hypotheses, but only based his publications on the basis of comprehensible facts. So he participated in many a scientific controversy, but always fought for the cause and stayed away from political hostility. In addition to the systematic overview of the birds in Bavaria , he planned similar works on mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians. The volume on mammals was almost finished, but has not yet been published. He was particularly fascinated by nocturnal animals such as owls and bats. Both had a bad reputation among the population, but Jäckel invalidated many prejudices in his book. In 1860 he published Die Bavarian Chiroptern , a work on bats. Starting with the myths about the harmful bat , he gradually refutes many untrue horror stories about these animals.

When he was transferred to Sommersdorf-Thann in 1861, he came to an area that was often flooded by the Altmühl in spring . From an ornithological point of view, the area was less interesting than it was in Neuhaus. So he shifted his focus to the study of fish without completely losing sight of his beloved birds. The fish of Bavaria appeared in 1864 or ichthyology from my diary between 1865 and 1867 . When he was transferred again in 1869, he published the history of locusts in Bavaria in 1870 and the reptiles and amphibians of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1871 . He also liked to deal with deformities in animals, e.g. B. About beak deformities of various birds , abnormalities such. B. Contributions to the doctrine of the anomalous animal male femininity (Gynandro morphism) or popular and superstition z. B. aphorisms about folk custom, superstition and folk medicine in Franconia, with special consideration for Upper Franconia .

His house became more and more of a natural history cabinet . He prepared the birds and animals he had shot himself, but was in constant contact with the Augsburg taxidermist Johann Friedrich Leu (1808–1882). In addition, he communicated regularly with foresters, hunters, fishermen and other taxidermists, but also with naturalists and zoologists such as Friedrich Kolenati (1812–1864).

Jäckel is said to have refused appointments to chairs of zoology in Heidelberg and Vienna . Instead, he tried to establish the Viennese night peacock butterfly ( Saturnia pyri ) in his homeland , a company that failed miserably.

When he was buried on July 14, 1885, there was great sympathy. A large part of his estate went to the Natural History Society in Nuremberg, parts of which still exist today.

Memberships

Jäckel was an honorary member of the Zoological-Mineralogical Association in Regensburg , the Natural History Association in Passau and the Natural History Society in Nuremberg . He was a corresponding member of the Oberschwäbischer Zweigverein für Vaterländische Naturkunde in Bad Schussenried (emerged from the Molasse Club of Konrad Miller (1844-1933)), the Society of Natural Sciences in Freiburg , the Wetterau Society for all natural history in Hanau and the Natural History Society in Augsburg . He was also a real member of the imperial Leopold-Carolinische Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher in Dresen , the kk Zoological-Botanical Society in Vienna , the Historical Association for Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg , the Historical Association for Middle Franconia and the German Ornithological Society . Membership in the Leopoldina is doubtful, however, as it was made by the illegitimate chairman Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (1793–1879) and was not recognized after the election of an official president.
