Friedrich Anton [August] Rudolph Kolenati , also Frederic and Rudolph , Czech Bedřich Antonín Kolenatý (* 1812 or 1813 in Prague ; † July 17, 1864 on Praděd ) was a Bohemian , k. k. Austrian physician, natural scientist and patron. His main areas of activity were in Saint Petersburg , Prague and Moravia .

Life

Kolenati studied medicine at the University of Prague and received his doctorate in this field in 1836. After graduating, he was hired as an assistant in the biology department of his university. In order to expand his knowledge, Kolenati went to Saint Petersburg and took up a position as assistant for zoology at the Imperial Academy in 1842. During this three-year stay in Russia, research trips with zoological and botanical interests took him to the Caucasus and neighboring regions. When he returned to Prague in 1845, he took the position of associate professor at the grammar school in the Lesser Town district .

Kolenati took an active part in the revolutionary events in Central Europe in 1848 . He traveled to Vienna as a member of a delegation. As a result of an error, he was then briefly imprisoned in Prague. In 1848 Kolenati completed his habilitation at Prague University in the field of medical-pharmaceutical zoology and botany as well as crystallography. Then he took over the professorship for botany, zoology and mineralogy at the Prague Polytechnic in the semester 1849-1850 , because the previous professor Franz Xaver Zippe went to Příbram as the new director of the montane school.

His activity in Prague was short-lived. On the basis of an imperial decree of December 29, 1849, Kolenati was appointed professor of natural history at the Imperial and Royal Technical College in Brno .

Friedrich A. Kolenati is the initiator and the first chairman of the natural history association "Lotos", which was founded in Prague in 1848 .

During a stay in the Jeseníky Mountains , he died unexpectedly. His grave is in Malá Morávka .
