Franz Xaver Maximilian Zippe (born January 15, 1791 in Nieder Falkenau , † February 22, 1863 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian scientist and technician.

Life

After attending secondary school in Dresden , he studied philosophy at Prague University from 1807 to 1809 . While still a student, he attended lectures by chemists Karl August Neumann (1771–1866) and Johann Joseph Steinmann (1779–1833), professor of general chemistry, at the polytechnic school in Prague . A closer relationship developed particularly with the second professor. In 1819 Zippe became his adjunct and since 1822 he has lectured mineralogy and geology.

He became a close collaborator of Count Kaspar Maria von Sternberg , founder of the Prague Patriotic Museum of the Bohemian Empire (predecessor of the National Museum Prague ). Zippe, who was already known for his passion for collecting during his youth, was one of the institute's first donors. Since March 1819 he has been cataloging and describing the collections and supplementing them with self-made crystal models.

From November 1, 1824 to 1842, he was responsible for the museum's mineralogical department. During this time he made trips to the Giant Mountains , Jizera Mountains and Jeseníky Mountains and enriched the museum with numerous minerals. From 1833 he worked out the 16-volume topography of Bohemia together with Johann Gottfried Sommer .

In 1847 he became one of the first members of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna . In 1846 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . From August 31, 1849 to October 1, 1850 he was director of the Montanlehrinstitut in Příbram . From November 1, 1850, he taught mineralogy at the University of Vienna .

In his honor, a uranium mineral, Zippeit (uranium blossom), from St. Joachimsthal was named after him.
