Příbram (German Pribram or Freiberg in Böhmen , also Przibram , 1939–45: Pibrans ) is a town in the Central Bohemian Region in the Czech Republic , about 60 km southwest of Prague with 35,963 inhabitants.

history

The first written mention of Příbram took place in 1216 as a property of the diocese of Prague . In 1289 Příbram was first referred to as a town. According to the mandate issued by Emperor Maximilian II on August 6, 1568, prohibiting Jews from staying in the mining towns , the Jews were also expelled from the little mining town of Příbram; a large part settled in Dušníky . Emperor Rudolf II elevated the Příbram to a royal mining town on November 20, 1579 . Subsequently, the route of the Golden Trail was also changed and led from Březnice via Příbram. After the Thirty Years War, the Příbram silver mining began to decline. In 1775 mining was resumed in the neighboring mountain town of Birkenberg . Příbram was the seat of an Imperial and Royal Mining Authority and a mountain court.

Between the 1880s and 1930s, Pibrans was an important location for pearl wreath production.

From 1949 on, uranium ore was mined around Příbram , with political prisoners being used as slave labor to a large extent. One of the largest forced labor camps was Vojna camp in the mountains south of the city. In 1953 the neighboring town of Březové Hory was incorporated.
