history

Kosova Hora Castle
The former synagogue

Kosova Hora was first mentioned in 1272 in connection with the building of the fortress by the Landsteiners . Until the Hussite Wars, the owners were the Lords of Amschelberg from the Wittigonen family . As a result of the wars, the fortress was desolate and the Amschelberg family died out.

In 1474 the lords of Říčany, who had owned the neighboring rule Hrádek (today: Červený Hrádek) since 1400 , Kosova Hora. Subsequently, Kosova Hora grew into a market town. After Vladislav II allowed the immigration of Jews, a strong Jewish community emerged . A synagogue was built in Amschelberg, the Jewish cemetery was laid out around 1580 and a Jewish school was operated. In the middle of the 16th century, the lords of Říčany founded a brewery, cheese factory and starch factory. In place of the desert festivals, a three-winged Renaissance castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Kosova Hora had a city coat of arms and had market rights.

The battle of the White Mountain ended the heyday of Amschelberg, the property of the Lords of Říčany was confiscated and the rule was left to Albrecht von Waldstein , who immediately sold it to Sezima von Vrtba . Amschelberg was burned down twice during the Thirty Years' War. This was followed by famine, plague and cholera . When Wenzel Adalbert Ritter Karwinski acquired the Amschelberg rule at the beginning of the 18th century, he renewed the privileges of the market town. In 1760 the place burned down completely. After the Karwinski died out in 1837, František Mladota von Solopisk acquired the rule. He had the castle rebuilt and given a facade in the Empire style.

In 1894 the railway from Olbramovice to Sedlčany was inaugurated. During the time of National Socialism, the Jewish community went extinct. After the Second World War, the market town sank to the village. The former synagogue is vacant.
