Karel Hartmann
Karel Hartmann (born July 6, 1885 in Pibrans ; † October 16, 1944 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a Czechoslovak ice hockey player and official.
Career and life
Karel Hartmann was born into a rich Jewish family that was based in Pibrans (Central Bohemia). A few years after his birth, the family moved to Prague .
Before the First World War he played ice hockey for Ceská sportovní spolecnost on the position of the rover , where he was known for his speed on the ice. After the war he continued to play for this club until it was dissolved, and then joined AC Sparta Prague . He played for this club between 1921 and 1928.
At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp , he won the bronze medal in the Olympic ice hockey tournament with the Czechoslovak national team . Between 1922 and 1923 he was Vice President of the LIHG and President of the Czechoslovak Ice Hockey Association . In 1923 he also won the bronze medal at the European Championships.
Hartmann was a lawyer by profession, also worked as a sports journalist for many years and was Vice President of AC Sparta Prague.
Hartmann did not practice the Jewish faith, but converted to Catholicism . Nevertheless, he and his family were deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp in July 1942 . On October 16, 1944, Hartmann and his wife were transferred to Auschwitz concentration camp , where they died on the same day. His two sons Jan and Jiri survived the Holocaust and later emigrated to North America.
