František Drtikol
František Drtikol (born March 3, 1883 in Příbram , † January 13, 1961 in Prague ) was the first important Czech photographer .
Life
After an apprenticeship in photography in the Antonin Mattas studio in Příbram from 1898 to 1901, Drtikol attended the teaching and research institute for photography in Munich from 1901 to 1903 (later renamed the Bavarian State Institute for Photography and from 1990 into the State Academy for Photo Design Munich ). From 1904 to 1907 he did military service, from 1907 to 1935 he ran his own studio, first in Příbram and later in Prague . 1945/46 Drtikol was professor at the School of Graphics in Prague.
The focus of his work was nude photography in the Art Deco style . The influence of Prague symbolism and “Art Nouveau” can be seen in his early works. In the 1920s and 30s, silent films , avant-garde and Art Deco shaped his work. Before the Second World War , František Drtikol gave up photography and from then on devoted himself to painting. His fame waned and he died lonely and forgotten in 1961. Only recently has his work regained a high status in the history of Czech photography.
