Jan Drda

Jan Drda (born April 4, 1915 in Příbram , † November 28, 1970 in Dobříš ) was a Czech prose writer and playwright.

Jan Drda was born the son of a worker. In 1921 he lost his mother, who died giving birth to the second child. His father started drinking after the second failed marriage and left the children. Jan Drda and his sister Marie were raised by their grandfather. Originally, he was supposed to start an apprenticeship as a plumber, but his grandmother managed to get him to attend high school in Příbram. In 1934 he graduated from high school and began studying philosophy at Charles University in Prague , which he did not finish.

From an early age he wrote stories for a small theater. From 1932 he also wrote articles for newspapers and magazines. His first work, the novel Městečko na dlani (City on the Palm), he published at the age of 25. From 1937 to 1942 he was editor of the Lidové noviny (People's Newspaper), for which he wrote feature sections and reports. After the end of World War II , he moved to Svobodné noviny (Freedom Newspaper), later to the daily Práce (Labor). In 1948 he returned to the Volkszeitung as editor-in-chief.

In 1945 he joined the communist party KSČ . He held important cultural and political functions, including a member of parliament from 1948 to 1960. In 1956 he became chairman of the Association of Czech Writers .

His work for the film was also important, here he wrote some scripts. At the end of his life he was editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Svět práce (World of Work), which he founded himself in 1968. Since it the invasion of the Warsaw Pact into Czechoslovakia condemned, he was released 1969th He died alone in Dobříš Castle .
