Ignaz Beth (Czech: Ignác Bett ; * 1877 in Příbram , Bohemia , † April 1, 1918 in Berlin ) was a German-Bohemian art historian and painter.

Life

Beth studied in Munich and Prague and earned the Dr. jur. In 1910 he received his doctorate in art history at the University of Freiburg under Wilhelm Vöge . He was mainly concerned with old German art. From 1910 to 1915 he edited the International Bibliography of Art History founded by Arthur L. Jellineck in Berlin .

He studied painting in Kraków , where he was a student of Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański , and in Warsaw with Leon Wyczólkowski . In 1912 and 1913 he exhibited urban landscapes at the Paris Salon d'Automne . He died in Berlin as a result of a tram accident. The Berlin art dealer Fritz Gurlitt organized a memorial exhibition in his gallery after Beth's death.
